2022 - When dreams come true

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly Wednesday blog which examines pillars of personal excellence and regularly brings together the worlds of spirituality and sport.

Dreams for young and old

“…your old men shall dream dreams and your young men shall see visions…”-Joel 2:28

Dreams that inspire

A Caribbean man with a big dream and a generous heart. This is how I would describe Bahamian NBA basketballer, Deandre Ayton, who plays for the Phoenix Suns. He remembered his humble beginnings and decided to use his God-given platform to serve others. He had a dream.

As recently reported by ESPN, Ayton has used his endorsement contract with sports brand PUMA as the springboard for charity and benevolence. His heart was to give back and this dream was also shared by his mother, Andrea.

Isn’t that beautiful? Mother and son, two different generations, sharing a dream of being a blessing to others. According to the ESPN report, Deandre’s words were simple, yet profound: “I grew up off of second-hand clothes, and for us to be in a position to help families and put smiles on their faces, it’s like a dream I never thought would’ve c[o]me true.”

Thousands of years ago and in a different historical and spiritual context than ours, the Old Testament prophet Joel articulated a similar thought. He had in mind that old and young alike would dream dreams, suggesting a positive outlook on their own future and those in their community.

What is your dream for 2022? I hope that you are still dreaming, notwithstanding the challenges that came along in 2021. I encourage you not to lose heart and to remember John Maxwell’s famous words that everything worthwhile in life is uphill. The journey towards excellence in everything is worth the struggle.

Dreams coming true

With sincere gratitude for your partnership this year, I wish you all God’s blessings, spiritual direction, personal growth and fulfilled dreams in 2022.
