Can I get a Witness

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly blog which examines pillars of personal excellence and regularly brings together the worlds of Christian spirituality and sport.

Witnessing Greatness

“And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well”-Mark 7:37

Witnessing History

There are times in life when we stop, gasp, and have to catch our collective breaths. This is because, sometimes, we are privileged to witness once-in-a-lifetime events. For those living in Los Angeles, Tuesday February 7, 2023 was one of those moments. The following numbers now have new meaning: 38, 388 by a 38-year old after over 38 years!

Indeed, I, too, join in the global accolades being offered to LeBron James as he became the highest scorer in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). In his twentieth year in the league, James continues to redefine excellence, consistency and longevity.  You don’t have to be a Lakers fan or even a LeBron supporter. It’s just a case of respecting greatness.

Some of us may be surprised to know that Jesus Christ had a similar type of impact in his day, not as an athlete but as a well-rounded human, complete in every way. In Mark’s Gospel, cited above, people were astonished when they paid attention to him. All that he did was done well. Everything!

Jesus’s reputation throughout history is unquestioned, whether or not you are his follower or even have an interest in spirituality. Still, I am not sure that through the ages he has been sufficiently remembered as being excellent in everything. That is how some witnesses described him and, for me, it is quite inspiring because it goes beyond religion and focuses on the inner person.

At a time when young persons are looking for heroes, we need flesh and blood examples that we can turn to and learn from. A teenager from Ohio took the world by storm twenty years ago and has not failed to deliver on his sporting potential. You may not break a world record, but you may very well encourage an unknown onlooker to achieve high standards, not only by your performance but also by your character.
