Foresight, Hindsight and Insight

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly Wednesday blog which replaces my previous Tuesday posts. These blogs will continue to examine pillars of personal excellence and will regularly bring together the worlds of spirituality and sport.

Foresight

“…the prudent give thought to their steps”-Proverbs 14:15

Hindsight

Mistakes can often be the best teachers. If we adopt a humble posture about our past errors, the future can be full of promise. This is the beauty of hindsight, where we reflect and evaluate with a view to getting better.

The recent news of Newcastle United manager, Steve Bruce, leaving the club by mutual consent seems to be an interesting blend of foresight and hindsight. As of today’s date, the club is yet to win a league game in the English Premiership 2021/2022 season. Boos from fans are now commonplace.

To add to the complexity of things at Newcastle, new wealthy owners are in charge. As we say in my home country, Trinidad and Tobago, Bruce appears to have “taken front.” A departure from a job by mutual consent means that he did not have to be fired, kicking and screaming. He saw what was coming and both parties agreed to call it a day.

Whatever his managerial results were from a football perspective, I applaud Bruce’s prudence in this scenario. BBC Sport reported that Bruce confessed that the job took a toll on his emotional health and it also affected his family life. He is contemplating retiring altogether from management.

Proverbs 14 above reminds us that when we give thought to our steps, it’s a mark of wisdom, discretion and insight. I think, I consider, I weigh, I ponder and then I act. Persons of faith would add, “I pray” to that list. This is not about procrastination. It’s about prudence. “Look before you leap” still has power in today’s world. How’s it going with you?

Insight

Pursuing prudence promotes peace and poise.
