Freedom to Choose - Marcus 2229

Welcome to my new Three-Peat Thursdays! Building from my recent book UNBEATABLE! Seven Pillars of Personal Excellence, each blog will contain three P’s: Pillar, Principle and Practical, all geared towards nourishing you on your personal and spiritual growth journey.

Pillar

“The training ground, then, for skillful judgment is found in our daily choices.” Unbeatable! Seven Pillars of Personal Excellence

Principle

Life is about choices. We cannot escape it. The month of August is a significant one for various Caribbean territories whether because of Emancipation Day or Independence Day celebrations, or election day as in my home country, Trinidad and Tobago. November is the month for political selection in the USA this year. Times like this help us to consider two powerful and interconnected features of life: freedom and choice.

How do you use your freedom today? How do you use your power of choice? I am reminded of the apostle Paul who offered sound spiritual counsel to his Galatian audience in these words: “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another.” Incredible instruction, isn’t it?

Paul said that the spiritual journey involved becoming slaves to one another through love. This is a major paradigm shift when we think of how self-indulgent our human natures can be. It also means turning the word ‘slave’ from something with a negative connotation to one that is positive and wholesome, when covered in a cloak of love and self-sacrifice.

We are free to choose connection. We are free to choose service to our fellow travellers on life’s journey. We are free to choose humility, forgiveness and reconciliation. We can be slaves to love and through love. That takes us right back to true spirituality because God is love. Love is always the right choice.

Practical

Choose love today and every day and, by the way, that also means loving your enemies.

To learn more about these pillars of personal excellence, read UNBEATABLE! which is now available on Amazon in print and as an e-book.
