Heroes and Villains - Marcus 2229

Welcome to Three-Peat Tuesday! Building from my recent book UNBEATABLE! Seven Pillars of Personal Excellence, each blog will contain three P’s: Pillar, Principle and Practical, all geared towards nourishing you on your personal and spiritual growth journey.

My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. If they say “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul;”-Lady Wisdom

My son. Your daughter. His nephew. Her niece. Our children. The youths. They need us now more than ever before.

Why is it that we give teenagers and “twenty-somethings” such a hard time? They are often an easy target, but they are not all bad. In fact, no one group or generation is only made up of bad apples. That would be an unfair generalisation.

What the youths need are visionaries, people who see them as future heroes and not as present villains. When we think of it, young people offer us ideas, innovation, creativity, energy, ambition and a whole lot of brains! They are our future. They need mentors, not accusers.

A state official in a Caribbean country recently made this statement publicly: “you characterise the worst of young people in [name of country].” The comment, predictably, received mixed reviews. Some felt that it was about time that someone stood up to the “young people.” Others considered it inappropriate.

My own view is that even if the official’s message had merit, it would have been more helpful if it were said tactfully, gracefully and, importantly, in a private setting. It did not matter that the person in question was the one who initiated the public dialogue.

Life is hard enough for young persons today, especially with the plethora of distractions vying for their attention. They need guidance and direction, models and exemplars, big brothers and big sisters. The older folks must constantly remind them that they have value. Adults, let us be a voice of hope for the next generation.

Become a hero for the youths in your life. Believe in them. Stick with them. Joyfully watch them blossom.

Thank you. So applicable to me, especially for the strong and opinionated young ones we have around us daily. I often have to pay attention to my tone, which doesnt come easily.
