How to have the perfect 2024

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly blog which examines pillars of personal excellence and regularly brings together the worlds of Christian spirituality and sport.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”-Paul, the Apostle

I invite you to pursue perfection in 2024. The idea here is neither idealism nor avoiding mistakes. The invitation is to wholesome thinking about life, spirituality, health, relationships and goals.

The Greek word teleios is typically translated as “perfect” in New Testament texts. It means being mature, complete or full grown. This was Paul’s invitation, cited above, to his first century audience. He says to them that they should learn what is God’s complete plan for their lives. The Divine will is good, pleasing and perfect, he says.

I ask you to consider whether anyone can truly offer you a perfect plan for life. Advertisers, celebrities, politicians, religious leaders, bosses and family members will all make promises, but no one can present you with a guaranteed plan for success. It is beyond our human limits. Yet, ancient Scripture makes this bold statement that God’s will for your life is unbeatable!

The launching pad is transformation. To attain “perfection” in 2024, we must think differently. Actions always begin as thoughts. What you do flows naturally from how you think. The new year will not be much better for us if we don’t change the way we think. This is more than positive thinking. It is an internal renewal of the heart, mind and soul that will produce a changed character and if we have integrity and wholeness in our character, we will have a good year, no matter what obstacles come our way.

Trust God at his Word. Surrender your will to His own, even when it looks scary. He has a perfect track record of victory. Perhaps, we also need to think differently about how we define success. The invitation is open.

Your path to perfection begins with reverent submission. Happy New Year.

“Consider whether anyone can truly offer you a perfect plan for life”. I often wish there was a visible plan to follow, almost like a map, to guide my steps without the need for faith. But yes indeed, God has a perfect track record of victory, which makes his plans for me exciting!
