Older, Better and Wiser

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly Wednesday blog which replaces my previous Tuesday posts. These blogs will continue to examine pillars of personal excellence and will regularly bring together the worlds of spirituality and sport.

“Let the wise listen and add to their learning…”-Proverbs 1:5

Better

It’s not automatic. The mere fact that time has passed does not necessarily mean that you are better today than you were two months ago. But wouldn’t that be great? Imagine improving your skills as a parent, teacher or worker simply by being around long enough.

Enough wishful thinking on my part. Life does not work that way. To improve, we must be intentional and deliberate. There is no quick fix. We must make a concerted effort, with a sense of focus and a spirit of commitment, determination and resolve.

This reminds me of two recent incidents. Current Los Angeles Lakers basketballer and NBA veteran, Carmelo Anthony, in his 19th year in the league made a profound comment after a match-winning performance. ESPN reported him as saying this: “Still passionate about the game. Still passionate about coming to work every day and getting better.”

Right here in the Caribbean, a prominent Queen’s Counsel from Barbados spoke about her desire to learn from someone considered to be a leading global sports lawyer. By the way, this Queen’s Counsel is already well respected in law and in sport and holds numerous leadership positions. Yet, she expressed her devotion to improving her craft. Beautiful.

This is the spirit of Proverbs 1:5 above. You are never too old or never too wise to keep adding to what you already know. This takes humility. Arrogance and pride tell us that we are good enough and must now pass on our wisdom to the next generation. This, too, is commendable but it is not the whole story. We must do one without neglecting the other. Life is a journey. The humble refuse to settle.

Wiser

Daily growth. Small steps. Intentionality. Wisdom resides there.

Posture is so important. Even more important, is the posture we choose to adopt; that will work positively or negatively against us.
