Shelly-Ann, Success and Sustainability

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly Wednesday blog which examines pillars of personal excellence and regularly brings together the worlds of spirituality and sport.

Setting up for Success

“All hard work brings a profit but mere talk leads only to poverty”-Proverbs 14:23

Shelly-Ann’s Success

It’s not easy, I don’t just turn up. I have to work.”-Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

For a second year running, Jamaican sprint queens have swept the podium! Undoubtedly, screams and shouts, honks and horns could be heard from Kingston to Negril earlier this week as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah grabbed another 1-2-3 at a major global sporting event. Indeed, gold, silver and bronze went to this terrific trio of standout 100 metre sprinters, leaving all others in their wake.

The magnificence of this feat was made even more outstanding when one considers that Shelly-Ann won her fifth world title at this distance. Further, she had a son just five years ago! She literally continues to set the pace and offer a wonderful template for sustainability and the pursuit of excellence.

Proverbs 14 above offers a clear, uncomplicated message to all who seek high standards of accomplishment. Work hard. This, too, was Shelly-Ann’s message as reported by CNN. Promises are not enough. Simply expressing lofty goals gets us nowhere. We must execute, over and over again, slowly but surely mastering our craft.

My own observation is that when we combine this assiduousness with a humble reliance on divine grace, we set ourselves up for victory and experience the sweet taste of success. Over time, getting that breakthrough becomes easier. I suppose we could say it’s as easy as 1-2-3!

The Secret to Success

Attaining success does not have to be complex. We must diligently and consistently put our hands to the task and see it through to completion.
