Shootings, Surviving and Scoring

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly Wednesday blog which examines pillars of personal excellence and regularly brings together the worlds of spirituality and sport.

The Strength to Survive

“Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes”-Psalm 119:23

The Strength to Score

Brian Robinson Jr. has lived to tell the story.

Far from being a world-famous running back in America’s National Football League (NFL), still this player has made the headlines in a context that can only be described as inspiring. How do you get shot twice in the leg, go to hospital, get released, return to training and then score a touchdown? Somehow, Robinson did it in less than 50 days.

When interviewed after the recent victory of his Washington Commanders team over the Chicago Bears, Robinson spoke about the support of his teammates and staff as well as the need for mental toughness. These are some of his words according to nfl.com: “I want to be a football player, I wanted to get back on the football field so I did everything I needed to do in my power, strength-wise, mentally-wise to get myself back on the field.”

Returning to play required strength of the mind. How we think impacts on how we respond to life’s inevitable challenges. This brings into focus the words of the psalmist cited above, who, in the midst of trouble, centred his mind on a firm, reliable foundation. He chose to ponder and reflect on the spiritual wisdom found in God’s revealed word.

Notice his inner poise: “even though…I will…” In other words, he is saying that even when he faces opposition or the negative energy the world can often bring, he will not be derailed because he can consider the amazing promises and principles of the inspired Scriptures. It’s a decision of the mind.

What is your thinking like in times of difficulty? Are there people around you who are up to no good and are seeking to steal your joy? I encourage you to respond rather than react. God puts his reputation on the line by saying that his Word can be trusted as a refuge. If in doubt, try it and see what happens.

The Strength to Endure

You are guaranteed to face setbacks in this life. Divine wisdom is secure and gives you the grace to endure.
