Will to Win - Putter in Golf

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly Wednesday blog which examines pillars of personal excellence and regularly brings together the worlds of spirituality and sport.

Divine Will

“Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”-James 4: 15

The Will to Succeed

When you get into a horrendous vehicular accident and survive, you could justifiably spend the rest of your life simply happy to be alive. Not Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods!

Amazingly, fourteen months after enduring the challenge of potentially career-ending injuries, Tiger Woods is on the cusp of returning to the prestigious Masters’ Golf Tournament to be played in Augusta, Georgia, USA.  This is nothing short of breath-taking mental strength and internal desire.

Many would consider it a victory that Woods is even poised to play such a high-level competition again. That is not enough as far as he is concerned. He wants to win! The New York Times reported Woods as saying that for him, he would not “show up to an event unless I think I can win it.”

Deluded or determined? It could go either way, I suppose. Some may see him as a dreamer who forgot that his best days are behind him. Others could hold the view that he is exceptionally disciplined and possesses an unbeatable will that refuses to be defeated by life’s hurdles.

One thing I appreciate about Woods’ communication with the media recently was that he said “as of right now, I feel like I am going to play.” He did not use the words “if it is God’s will” but he seems to have acknowledged that circumstances could change between the time of his media interview and the start of the tournament.

Do you seek to be guided by divine will? Is there an inner sense in you that understands your need to exercise discipline, while still yielding to God’s ultimate direction for your life? It is my respectful view that this is fundamental for truly living lives of success and significance.

A Will that Surrenders

Live every day with the diligence that plans well and the humility that surrenders well.
