Transformation Trumps Information

Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly blog which examines pillars of personal excellence and regularly brings together the worlds of Christian spirituality and sport.

Informed

“Being well-taught is not the same thing as being transformed”-Ruth Haley Barton, author.

Transformed

I am privileged to have a life centred on teaching others. During this current season, I am a law teacher tasked with the joy of imparting legal principles to students from various walks of life. In my spiritual community, I am honoured to be able to equip others for works of service and to learn how to depend on divine wisdom more than human wisdom. Teaching is beautiful.

Yet, there is a danger both for the one who teaches and for the one who learns. Knowledge puffs up. When we learn new and exciting things, it becomes tempting to see ourselves as better than others. Hubris starts knocking at our door and it takes intentionality to resist its allure.

This is why Barton’s statement above is so helpful. To know is not the same as to change. In this life, especially for those who pursue greater depths of spirituality, transformation is the goal. Christian spirituality has as its thesis statement, the pursuit of holiness and a Christlike character. Other spiritualities have different variations of transformative goals in their own unique ways. It is why we meditate, pray, fast and seek silence and solitude. Still, no one truly wants to be the same at the end as they are at the beginning.

With one more month left in 2023, many people have started to consider their 2024 ambitions. I suspect that nobody has this as their goal: “I want to stay exactly the same this coming year-no growth, no improvement.” We are wired for transformation, and as a result, we must be deliberate when it comes to our inner life, the secrets of our hearts and the ponderings of our souls. This is where our true self resides and the place from which we discover meaning and purpose.

Reformed

Reformation and transformation rise gracefully above information.

This is true. Truly want to become more than I already am in 2023 but the transformation has to take place.

I, too, am hopeful of being on a continued journey of growth, Michelle.

I think of transformation as a measure of growth, inner growth of the heart and mind.
