Welcome to “Athlos” a weekly Wednesday blog which replaces my previous Tuesday posts. These blogs will continue to examine pillars of personal excellence and will regularly bring together the worlds of spirituality and sport.
Unceasing Faith
“Pray without ceasing”-1 Thessalonians 5:17
Unceasing Patience
As I write today’s blog, the city of Atlanta in the state of Georgia, USA is celebrating a major victory having won baseball’s showpiece event, the World Series. In the English-speaking Caribbean, baseball does not take pride of place unless you are a real sports fan. Stay with me, though. Something inspiring happened in Atlanta.
The name, Brian Snitker, is by no means a household. Brian Lara or Brian Mc Knight maybe but surely not Brian Snitker. This is exactly what makes the stories of these quiet heroes so powerful.
At 66 years old, Snitker has invested 44 years in the Atlanta Braves organization. That’s almost four and a half decades! The Washington Post reports that, at his age, he has become the second oldest manager to win his first World Series title. A 44-year wait to accomplish your goal. That is a fantastic expression of unending patience and an unceasing resolve to reach your target.
Do you have an unceasing spirit or do you give up easily? What noble goal have you set that you have already given up on due to setbacks? As I reflect on the apostle Paul’s words to the community of believers in Thessalonica above, I am compelled to consider the impact of doing something unceasingly.
Will I pray continually? Am I determined to never give up on people? Do I see obstacles as opportunities to develop a stronger character and mental fortitude? Life will constantly offer us the chance to become people who are unceasing in our pursuit of excellence.
Be inspired by the patience of a 66-year-old in Atlanta.

You’re absolutely right, Alexei. Thank you.
It is an inspiring story of patience and persistence, Ronke. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this. I am reminded about my need to stay the course with the bumps and all. It wont always be smooth sailing and that is where the growth takes place.
I agree, Michelle. The struggle is often a precursor to growth.
